Fort Pike State Historic Site is a significant historical landmark, named after Brigadier General Zebulon Pike. This 19th-century fort, now decommissioned, offers a glimpse into the past and the military history of the United States. Visitors can explore the site and learn about its strategic importance in the past.
The ruins of Fort Pike have long been a tourist attraction. However, the site has faced several closures due to damage from hurricanes, including Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and Hurricanes Gustav and Isaac in 2008 and 2012, respectively. Despite these challenges, the site has been restored and reopened to the public.
The Fort Pike site officially reopened to the public on May 2, 2008. However, due to damage caused by Hurricane Gustav in early September 2008, the park had to be closed indefinitely. As of June 2009, the fort was open again and has been undergoing extensive repairs and restoration work to preserve its historical integrity.
