The Francisco de Lacerda Museum is an island museum situated in the municipality of Calheta, on the island of São Jorge. It operates under the supervision of the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Azores. This location offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore the rich cultural heritage of the Azores, particularly that of São Jorge.
The Francisco de Lacerda Museum, inaugurated in 1991, initially housed a predominantly ethnographic collection. However, in 2020, the museum relocated to the ruins of the old Marie d’Anjou Canning Factory. This move allowed the museum to expand its thematic scope, incorporating a regional perspective into its exhibits.
The new premises of the Francisco de Lacerda Museum host permanent exhibitions that focus on the history of the Island of São Jorge, Azorean music, and the canning industry. A special emphasis is placed on Maestro Francisco de Lacerda, a significant figure in Azorean music.
The Francisco de Lacerda Museum operates on different schedules depending on the season. From April 1 to September 30 (summer), the museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 - 17:30, with the last entry at 17:30. It is closed on Mondays. From October 1 to March 31 (winter), the museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 09:30 - 17:00, with the last entry at 17:00. It remains closed on Mondays during this period as well.
