Gljúfrasteinn, located in Mosfellsdal by the Köldukvísl river, was the home of renowned author Halldór Laxness and his family for more than fifty years. Today, it serves as a museum dedicated to the life and works of the author. Visitors can explore the house and gain insights into the life of one of Iceland's most celebrated literary figures.
Gljúfrasteinn is preserved in almost its original condition, allowing visitors to experience the house as it was during Halldór's lifetime. The house contains various interesting items from Halldór and Auður's possession, including Halldór's entire library. This offers a unique opportunity to delve into the personal world of the author.
In addition to its historical significance, Gljúfrasteinn also houses a collection of artworks by leading artists of the twentieth century. These include works by Jóhannes Kjarval, Nína Tryggvadóttir, Louisa Matthíasdóttir, Svavar Guðnason, Karl Kvaran, and Ásmundur Sveinsson. This collection adds another layer of cultural richness to the museum.
