Haddenham is a large village in Buckinghamshire, 7 miles from Aylesbury, 19 miles from Oxford and 55 miles from London. The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book and until the early 20th century was mainly an agricultural community. The village museum was established in 1998 by a group of local enthusiasts and is run entirely by volunteers. Based in the old Methodist church schoolroom, our small space is packed with hundreds of fascinating items which chart the village's history from prehistoric times to the present. Exhibits include a description of the unusual local cob building material "witchert"; a detailed map showing the effect of the Enclosure Act of 1830, when the open fields and commons were hedged and fenced and the need for labour was greatly reduced; displays showing changes in farming from manual and horse-power through wind, steam, and diesel; memorabilia from both world wars; and numerous other items recording the changes in the homes of Haddenham's folk. There are plenty of hands-on exhibits and multimedia displays and visitors of all ages are welcome. We also publish the annual Haddenham Chronicles, containing articles covering all aspects of the village's history. All 21 editions are on sale in the museum along with other maps and guides, etc. Admission is free and we are open on Tuesday mornings (10.00-12.00) and Sunday afternoons (14.00-16.30) from early March until late December.
