After being built at the summit of a nearby mountain in 757, the shrine was moved to its current location in 1667. This shining red Japanese Shinto shrine also houses a small museum. An annual festival is held here on August 1. It is located only a short walk from the Moto-Hakone boat pier.

Hakone Shrine, located in the scenic town of Hakone, Japan, offers visitors a serene and culturally rich experience. The shrine is set against the backdrop of Lake Ashi, providing a picturesque setting that many visitors find captivating. The iconic red torii gate standing in the lake is a popular photo spot and adds to the shrine's visual appeal.
Visitors often appreciate the peaceful atmosphere and the opportunity to learn about Japanese Shinto traditions. The shrine's architecture, including its main buildings and smaller shrines, is noted for its traditional style and attention to detail. Many find the climb up the stone steps to the main shrine area to be invigorating, though some may find it challenging.
The shrine is particularly beautiful during cherry blossom season and autumn, when the surrounding nature enhances the spiritual ambiance. Some visitors mention that the shrine can get crowded, especially during peak tourist seasons or on weekends, which may detract from the tranquil experience.
While not a museum in the traditional sense, Hakone Shrine offers historical and cultural value. Some visitors note that there could be more English information available about the shrine's history and significance. However, many find that the spiritual atmosphere and natural beauty more than make up for this.
Overall, Hakone Shrine is widely regarded as a worthwhile visit for those interested in Japanese culture, spirituality, and natural beauty. It provides a good balance of scenic views, historical significance, and a peaceful retreat from the bustle of more touristy areas.
