Haugar Art Museum, often simply referred to as Haugar, is an art museum located in Tønsberg in Vestfold and Telemark. The museum primarily exhibits Norwegian contemporary art. It offers a diverse and extensive annual exhibition program, featuring constantly changing exhibitions of both older art and contemporary art from both Norway and abroad.
The Haugar Art Museum is situated on a hill, Haugar (Møllebakken), in the heart of the city. This location was historically a place of assembly during the Viking Age. The museum's location offers both a beautiful and historical setting, nestled in park-like surroundings between the old assembly place Haugating and a couple of even older burial mounds.
The Haugar Art Museum is housed in the former Seamen's School, located in the middle of Tønsberg city center. This impressive brick building was designed by the architects Bjercke and Eliassen and was constructed between 1918 and 1921. The building's facade was designed in collaboration with the sculptor Wilhelm Rasmussen, who adorned it with 12 caryatids in larvikite from the Brøttsø quarry on Tjøme, representing some of the exotic peoples that seafarers would meet around the world.
