The Lincoln Family Home remained in the possession of the Lincoln family until 1975. After this, the property was purchased by a non-profit organization, the Friends of Hildene, in 1978. This organization undertook the restoration of the house, its outbuildings, and gardens, preserving the historical integrity of the property.
Name, Architecture, and Location
The name 'Hildene' originates from old English words meaning 'hill' and 'valley with stream'. The house, completed in 1905 in the Georgian Revival style, is situated on a 300-foot promontory, providing a panoramic view of the Battenkill Valley. This location and architectural style add to the charm and historical significance of the property.
Furnishings and Artifacts
Hildene is furnished almost entirely with Lincoln family furniture, providing an authentic glimpse into the past. The house also contains artifacts belonging to Robert Todd Lincoln and his parents. One of the notable features of the house is the Æolian pipe organ, installed in 1908 and restored in 1980 by the Friends of Hildene.
