The Hornby School, located in Greenfield Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania, is a significant historical site. It is one of the ten one-room schoolhouses that were constructed in the township, and it stands as one of only two such schoolhouses in Erie County that have not undergone significant alterations. This makes it a unique and authentic representation of the educational history of the region.
Constructed in 1875, the schoolhouse was originally known as Shadduck School and remained in continuous operation until 1956. After its closure, the schoolhouse was restored and reopened as the Hornby School Museum in 1984. In recognition of its historical value, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.
The Hornby School operates as a working one-room schoolhouse, replicating the operation of the school from the 1870s to the early 1900s. All of the chalkboards, desks, and other teaching implements are either original to the Hornby School or were sourced from one of the other schoolhouses in the township. This provides visitors with an authentic experience of the educational practices of the time.
