The museum is housed in a building that was originally the Oregon Short Line Railroad Depot, a subsidiary of the Union Pacific Railroad. Visitors can also explore a timeline history of potato consumption in the US. Additionally, the museum displays Peruvian-made vessels that are over 1,600 years old, believed to be the first containers specifically used for potato storage.

The Idaho Potato Museum offers more than just exhibits. Attached to the museum is the Spud Seller gift shop, where visitors can purchase merchandise with a potato or Idaho theme. In 2016, the museum expanded its offerings by renovating the depot's baggage claim area and opening the Potato Station Café. Here, visitors can enjoy a variety of potato-based foods, including baked potatoes and French fries.
