The Indianermuseum Derenburg was opened to the public in September 2015 and unfortunately closed its doors at the end of 2017. However, from 2022 onwards, parts of the museum's exhibition will be displayed at the Napoleon Museum in Bad Harzburg, ensuring that the rich cultural heritage showcased in the museum continues to be accessible to the public.
The Indianermuseum Derenburg boasted a vast collection of nearly 4000 ethnographic and archaeological objects, as well as exhibits of both indigenous and non-indigenous Americans. This extensive collection was further enriched by thousands of ethnographic photo documents, written records, and sound documents, providing a comprehensive and immersive experience of the diverse cultures of the Americas.
The Indianermuseum Derenburg housed several outstanding exhibits. These included a fire ant ritual glove, blowpipes and other weapons from the Amazon, and pre-Columbian grave goods of the Chimu and Inka from Peru. Other notable exhibits were hand-painted Delft "Manhattan Trade Beads", a Cherokee warrior shirt from 1840, several dance masks from the Northwest Coast, and a vest of a Dakota medicine man. These exhibits provided a unique insight into the diverse cultures and traditions of the indigenous peoples of the Americas.
