The Instituto Histórico de Jaboatão (IHJ) is a non-profit organization that focuses on the study, discussion, investigation, and scientific exploration of the history, geography, and ethnography of Brazil, Pernambuco, and particularly the municipality of Jaboatão dos Guararapes. It aims to preserve the memory of the region for future generations and is the primary source of research about the history of the municipality.
In 2006, the then governor José Mendonça Filho, through Law 13.107, granted the current building, constructed in 1923 by Dr. Sérgio Loreto, Governor of the State of Pernambuco, to the IHJ. This building, which served as the old municipal jail for many years, now houses the institute and its historical collections.
