The Johann-Friedrich-Danneil-Museum, also known as the Danneil-Museum, is a local history museum situated in Salzwedel, Saxony-Anhalt. The museum was established in 1836 and is named after the prehistorian and high school professor Johann Friedrich Danneil. This museum is one of the first German association museums and has a rich history that dates back to the 19th century.
The museum's collection comprises numerous prehistoric and early historical exhibits from the Altmark region. Over the years, the collection has been housed in various locations including the Salzwedel town hall, a side chapel of the Marienkirche, and the district court. These exhibits provide a glimpse into the region's rich history and cultural heritage.
Today, the museum's collection boasts over 30,000 inventoried finds from the entire Altmark region. Among the most notable exhibits are the "Salzwedel Madonna", an oak wood sculpture dating back to 1225/1230, and the 1582 "Weinbergaltar" from the workshop of Lucas Cranach the Younger. These artifacts offer visitors a unique insight into the region's past and its artistic heritage.
