Kaymakli Underground City is a historical site located within the citadel of Kaymakli in the Central Anatolia Region of Turkey. It is situated approximately 19 kilometers from Nevşehir, on the Nevşehir- Niğde road. This location makes it easily accessible for tourists visiting the region.
The Kaymakli Underground City has a rich history dating back to the 8th–7th centuries BC. It was first built in the soft volcanic rock by the Phrygians, an Indo-European people. The city was greatly expanded and deepened during the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) era, making it a significant historical site.
The Kaymakli Underground City is open to tourists and consists of four floors, each organized around ventilation shafts. The first floor houses a stable, while the second floor is home to a church with a nave and two apses. The third floor contains storage places, wine or oil presses, and kitchens. The fourth floor is characterized by numerous storage rooms and areas for earthenware jars, indicating some economic stability.
