The Zumsteinhaus, located at Residenzplatz 31 in Kempten (Allgäu), is a monument protected by law. It was constructed in 1802 for the Zumstein de la Pierre family, who were merchants from Savoy. The building underwent restoration in 1959.

Establishment of the Kempten Museum

The Zumsteinhaus was closed from 2015 for extensive renovation work and the establishment of a new city museum. The Kempten Museum, located within the Zumsteinhaus, was officially opened to the public from December 6 to 8, 2019.

Redesign of the Kempten Museum

The new city museum, known as the Kempten Museum, underwent a complete redesign. Instead of a chronological organization, the museum is arranged thematically. The goal of this redesign was to convey the extensive cultural heritage of the city of Kempten (Allgäu) in a lively manner and to establish an open, communicative, and accessible cultural hub.

The Kempten Museum in the Zumsteinhaus offers visitors an insightful look into the history and culture of Kempten and the Allgäu region. Located in a historic building, the museum presents a collection that spans from prehistoric times to the present day.

Visitors often appreciate the well-organized exhibits that showcase the area's Roman heritage, medieval history, and development into modern times. The museum's strengths lie in its archaeological finds and its presentation of local traditions and customs. Many reviewers find the Roman artifacts particularly interesting, as Kempten was once an important Roman settlement.

The museum's layout is generally praised for being easy to navigate, with informative displays in German. However, some international visitors note that more extensive translations in other languages would enhance their experience. The staff is often described as friendly and knowledgeable, willing to provide additional information when asked.

While the museum is not exceptionally large, it offers a comprehensive overview of the region's history in a manageable size. This makes it suitable for a visit of 1-2 hours, which many find appropriate for the content provided. Some visitors mention that certain sections could benefit from updates or more interactive elements to engage younger audiences.

The location in the historic Zumsteinhaus adds to the museum's charm, though a few reviewers note that accessibility might be challenging for those with mobility issues due to the building's age and layout.

Overall, the Kempten Museum in the Zumsteinhaus is considered a worthwhile visit for those interested in local history and culture. It provides a solid introduction to the region's past and is generally seen as good value for the admission price.
