The first part of the exhibition, which was built in 2011, features houses, roads, railways, and rivers. These models are based on the area bounded by the East Frisian islands of Borkum and Norderney, the city of Papenburg, and the fortress Bourtange.
The first stage of an expansion at Leeraner Miniaturland, featuring Oldenburg and Bad Zwischenahn, was opened on September 1, 2016. Once the expansion is complete, the exhibition will also include areas from Wilhelmshaven, Harlingerland, and Cloppenburg.
In June 2013, Leeraner Miniaturland opened a garden railway that is built to a scale of 1:22. The track spans a total length of about 1 km. It is designed in such a way that visitors can control the operation of different locomotives and set track switches.
