The Musée du Léman, located in the city of Nyon in Switzerland, is a museum dedicated to natural history and cultural history. It is situated near Lake Geneva in the lower town of Nyon, next to the Parc du bourg-de-rive, and is only separated from the port of Nyon by the main road 1. The museum was founded in 1954 by teacher and local historian Edgar Pelichet with the aim of documenting the cultural, economic, and social history of his city Nyon's relationship with Lake Geneva and its natural scientific peculiarities.

The Collection of the Musée du Léman

The Musée du Léman boasts a collection of around 14,000 objects and an archive of about 100,000 written documents. It has received significant special collections from Jacques Piccard, Auguste Piccard, François-Alphonse Forel, Aldo Balma, Abraham Hermanjat, Henri Copponex, and the shipping company CGN. From 2000 to 2001, the city of Nyon built a modern collection depot for the museum.

The Nautical Collection of the Musée du Léman

The Musée du Léman has a nautical collection that includes numerous image documents on the development of passenger shipping on the lake. It also houses more than 50 ships and boats, as well as over 150 ship models. One of the museum rooms is dedicated to the large historical sailing ships of Lake Geneva. These heavy cargo ships, known as the Barques du Léman, were used for the transport of heavy bulk goods on the lake until they were replaced by motor ships.
