In 1777, the house was assigned to the librarian Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, who had been working in Wolfenbüttel for some time, as a residence after his marriage to Eva König. Lessing lived and worked here until his death in 1781.
Today, the house belongs to the Herzog August Library and serves as a museum dedicated to the life and work of Lessing in Wolfenbüttel.
