The Local History Center, known as Lokalhistorisk senter, is situated at Karljohansvern, close to the canal, in Kommandørkaptein Klincks vei 2. The center is housed in the old infirmary building, which is owned by the Horten municipality.
The Lokalhistorisk senter opened the city museum and its collections to the public in March 2007. In addition to the museum, the center also operates its own café, café Breda, which is named after Alf Breda, a local history enthusiast in the city.
The Lokalhistorisk senter is dedicated to collecting, organizing, and archiving various documents, protocols, drawings, and more. It also collects and digitizes local historical photographs. The largest digitized single collection is the archive of Horten Verft, with about 16,000 photographs that have been digitized and captioned.
