The Lousado Railway Museum, also known as the Lousado Museum Center, is a branch of the National Railway Museum. It is situated in the parish of Lousado, within the Municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão. This location makes it easily accessible for tourists visiting the region, offering a unique insight into the history and development of the railway industry in Portugal.
The Lousado Railway Museum is housed in the former workshops of the Guimarães Railway Company, which was active from 1880 to 1927. This historical setting adds a layer of authenticity to the museum, allowing visitors to step back in time and experience the atmosphere of a working railway workshop from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
One of the highlights of the Lousado Railway Museum is the oldest narrow-gauge locomotive in Portugal, which was built in England in 1874. The museum also features a medical carriage dedicated to Egas Moniz, a railway doctor who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1949. These exhibits provide a fascinating glimpse into the technological advancements and human stories of the railway industry.
