The Marienfelde Refugee Center Museum is a museum in Berlin that is devoted to the subject of leaving the GDR. Around four million people left the GDR to the Federal Republic between 1949 and 1990; 1.35 million of those passed the 1953 founded Refugee Center in Berlin-Marienfelde where they were cared for and went through the necessary procedures to obtain a residence permit for the Federal Republic and West Berlin.
