Meadowcroft Rockshelter is an archaeological site located near Avella in Washington County, southwest Pennsylvania, United States. It is situated about 36 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. The site was excavated from 1973 to 1978 by a team from the University of Pittsburgh led by James M. Adovasio. It provides evidence of early human occupation, possibly dating back to 16,000 years ago and possibly even up to 19,000 years ago.

Discoveries at Meadowcroft Rockshelter

At Meadowcroft Rockshelter, remains of game and Paleo-Indian elements have been discovered, indicating the processing of animals such as deer, reindeer, bird eggs, and mussels; and also plants like corn, fruits, nuts, and seeds. The site has yielded the largest collection of flora and fauna recovered from the eastern North America. Many tools from different periods have also been found, including pottery, bifaces, laminar blades, a lanceolate projectile point, and several fluted points.
