The Meininger Museen is a combination of three cultural-historical museums located in the district town of Meiningen. It is the largest museum in southern Thuringia and houses the most extensive art collection in Thuringia. The main part of the museum, divided into four sections, is located in Elisabethenburg Castle, the former residence of the Dukes of Saxe-Meiningen.
In the baroque three-wing complex of Elisabethenburg Castle, extensive art collections, theater history, regional history, music history, and the Max Reger Archive are presented on three floors in 52 rooms with 3,400 square meters of exhibition space and up to 250,000 exhibits.
The newest museum is the 'Magic World of Scenery' theater museum, opened in 2000, located in the former riding hall on the castle square. It offers an annually changing exhibition of historically valuable stage prospects from the travel time of the Meininger Court Theater.
