The Convent of San Francisco de Asís, located in the homonymous square in Old Havana, is a testament to the city's rich architectural history. The construction of this baroque architectural religious building began in 1548 and lasted until 1591. Although it was inaugurated in 1575, the building was not completely finished until almost 200 years later, following a series of structural reforms that took place from 1731 to 1738.
Today, the interior of the monastery is home to the Museum of Sacred Art of Havana. This museum is considered one of the most significant cultural sites in the city, offering visitors a unique insight into the religious art and history of Havana.
Since 1608, the Convent of San Francisco de Asís has housed a chapel of the Third Order of San Francisco. This chapel was a place where tribute was paid to the image of the Christ of the True Cross, which was taken out in procession through the streets of Havana on Good Friday. Today, this space serves as a concert hall, with a special focus on chamber music.
