The museum was known for its collection of artefacts associated with Admiral Horatio Nelson, as well as a local history collection. These collections provided a unique insight into the life and times of Admiral Nelson and the local history of Monmouth.
In 2021, the Monmouthshire County Council announced plans to relocate the museum collection to the Shire Hall in Agincourt Square. This move is part of a five-year project supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, with the new museum expected to open by 2027.
In addition to the Nelson collection, the museum also holds items relating to the history and archaeology of Monmouth town. It also houses an archive relating to Charles Rolls and his family, providing a comprehensive view of the town's past.
