The Moorcroft Heritage Visitor Centre in Stoke-on-Trent offers an insightful look into the world of Moorcroft pottery. Visitors can explore the history and craftsmanship behind this renowned brand of decorative pottery. The center provides demonstrations of the pottery-making process, allowing guests to witness the skilled artisans at work. The museum section houses a collection of Moorcroft pieces, showcasing the evolution of designs over the years. While many visitors appreciate the guided tours for their informative nature, some find them a bit rushed. The on-site shop is popular, offering a range of Moorcroft products, though prices are noted to be on the higher side. The center is relatively small, which some visitors find limiting, but others appreciate for its focused and intimate experience. Parking can be challenging during busy periods. Overall, the Moorcroft Heritage Visitor Centre is well-regarded by pottery enthusiasts and those interested in British craftsmanship, but may have limited appeal for those not specifically interested in ceramics.
On the Moorcroft factory tour you are shown in detail every stage of the distinctive Moorcroft hand-made process with opportunity to question the people who are doing it. At some points it felt quite close to trade-secret territory. Because it's 100% hand-made, each stage was something which I could relate to as a very amateur occasional potter with hopes of utilising one or two techniques myself. It's a tiring tour because it's so detailed (bring a bottle of water!) but was 100% worth it for me – the best thing in my 3 pottery visits in Stoke and gave me some completely new ideas. But I’m not sure whether it would be quite so fascinating if you weren’t a hands-on potter yourself. It could be worth reading carefully in advance the summary of the Moorcroft technique on their website, as I did, because there's a lot to take in. The Moorcroft staff were very generous with their time on the tour. The Moorcroft items on display in the museum are truly beautiful.
