Mount Grace Priory and its collection

Set amid woodland below the escarpment of the North York Moors and the Cleveland Way National Trail, Mount Grace is a monastic ruin of an unusual kind. It is the best-preserved of the ten British 'charterhouses', whose Carthusian monks lived as hermits in cottage-like cells. A reconstructed monk's cell and recently revamped herb plot offer a glimpse into the live of the medieval residents. The gardens are a haven for wildlife, including the 'Priory Stoats'.

Mount Grace Priory, located near Northallerton in England, offers visitors a glimpse into the life of medieval Carthusian monks. The site features well-preserved ruins of the priory, including the cloister and individual monk cells. The on-site museum provides informative displays about the history and daily routines of the monks who once lived there. Visitors appreciate the peaceful atmosphere and the opportunity to explore the beautifully maintained gardens. The recently restored manor house, dating from the 17th century, adds another layer of historical interest to the site. While some visitors note that the site is relatively small, many find the combination of ruins, gardens, and museum exhibits to be engaging and educational. The surrounding woodland offers pleasant walks for those interested in nature. Some reviewers mention that the site may not be as suitable for young children due to its historical focus, but overall, Mount Grace Priory is considered a worthwhile visit for those interested in medieval history or seeking a tranquil day out.
