The Archaeological Museum of Saturnia is situated in the quaint hamlet of Saturnia, nestled within the municipal territory of Manciano. This location offers visitors a chance to explore the rich history of the region while enjoying the serene beauty of the Italian countryside.
The museum's main pieces are part of the collection of Gaspero Ciacci, a wealthy landowner who amassed a large number of ancient artifacts between the end of the 19th century and the 1930s. These artifacts were unearthed during excavations carried out by Riccardo Mancinelli between 1895 and 1903 in various locations of the Albegna and Fiora hills, and by Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli in 1927 at Montemerano. This collection provides a fascinating glimpse into the region's past.
Among the museum's exhibits are three small jugs in the shape of a duck, each with its own unique history. The first jug dates from the period between 350 and 280 BC and was made in Tarquinia. The second, from the same period, was made in Chiusi. The third jug, dating from between 120 and 90 BC, stands out with its vibrant red color. These artifacts offer a tangible connection to the ancient civilizations that once inhabited the region.
