The Museo Civico Archeologico e Pinacoteca "Edilberto Rosa" in Amelia, inaugurated in April 2001, is located in the former convent of San Francesco. This historic building has served various purposes over the years, including a public school, a boys' college, and a technical institute, before being abandoned for about 30 years. Today, it houses the museum, which is spread over three levels and features a typical Franciscan cloister characterized by a double loggia made in Renaissance forms by Fra Egidio Delfini in the 16th century.

Collections and Exhibits

The museum is divided into three levels, each hosting various collections that trace the birth and development of the city of Ameria, an ancient Italic center. The collections span from the pre-Roman phase to the late ancient period, including the flourishing Roman and particularly Augustan period. The ground floor houses the oldest artifacts, including those from the Hellenistic necropolis of the former Agrarian Consortium. The first floor is dominated by the presence of a splendid bronze statue with a portrait of Germanicus, and it houses evidence of Amelia's flourishing Roman period with inscriptions, capitals, statues, funeral urns, and stelae that cover a period from the 1st century BC to the 2nd century AD.

Discovery of a Necropolis

In 2001, during a building excavation, a necropolis dating back to the 4th century BC was discovered not far from Via I Maggio. The objects found, which include personal care accessories, mirrors, tweezers, eyebrow combs, ornaments, earrings, precious rings, and other everyday objects, are now preserved in the pre-Roman section of the Civic Museum. This discovery provides a fascinating insight into the lives of the people who lived in the area during this period.
