Museo Civico di Palazzo dei Consoli

The Museo Civico di Gubbio, housed in the Palazzo dei Consoli, is a multi-faceted museum with a variety of sections and collections spread across its five floors. These include an art gallery, a ceramics section, an archaeological collection, an oriental collection, and a risorgimento collection. Each of these collections offers a unique insight into different aspects of Italian and global history and culture.

Archaeological Section of the Museum

The archaeological section of the Museo Civico di Gubbio is situated in the large hall of the arengo, the former sacristy, and the chapel of the Palazzo dei Consoli. This section showcases a variety of artifacts unearthed from excavations carried out in the surrounding areas until the 19th century. Notably, it includes fragments or parts of sculptures, marbles from the Roman and medieval period, inscriptions, and a Roman sarcophagus, all of which were discovered at the site of the Roman Theater of Gubbio.

The Eugubine Tables

The former chapel of the Palazzo dei Consoli houses the seven precious Eugubine Tables, which were sold to the municipality of Gubbio in 1456. These tables, dating from the III or II century BC, are inscribed with Umbrian characters. Tables VI and VII, however, are written in the Latin alphabet and are believed to date back to the I century BC. Table V features Umbrian characters on one side and Latin characters on the other. The tables written in the Umbrian alphabet are referred to as "paleoumbre", while those written in the Latin alphabet are called "neoumbre".

Municipal Art Gallery of the Museum

The upper floor of the Palazzo dei Consoli is home to the municipal art gallery, which has been in place since 1909. The gallery is spread across five rooms, each showcasing different works of art. The first room features a round painting of the Madonna with Child from the XIV century and a Crucifixion on board from the XIII century by the Master of the Cross of Gubbio. The second room houses a Coronation of the Virgin from the second half of the 15th century and a San Vincenzo Ferreri. The third room displays a fifteenth-century terracotta, while the fourth room contains various Renaissance works. The last room preserves a painting attributed to Sassoferrato.
