The Museo della bambola e del giocattolo, also referred to as the Museum of Dolls and Children's Fashion, is a specialized museum located in Angera, Italy. It is housed in the Rocca Borromea and is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. The museum showcases a vast collection of vintage dolls, toys, and mechanical automata dating back to the 18th century.

Collection of the Museum

Founded in 1988 by Princess Bona Borromeo Arese, the museum displays over a thousand dolls made from the 18th century onwards. The dolls are made from a variety of materials that were popular in the past, including wood, wax, papier-mâché, porcelain, biscuit, composition, and fabric. These dolls, richly dressed and equipped with miniature accessories, are displayed alongside a variety of toys, domestic accessories, rare furniture models, fully furnished doll houses, miniature shops, board and educational games, books, magazines, photographs, collections of children's bookplates, and figurines.

Historical Toys

The museum houses a collection of toys from the golden age of European industrial toys, dating from the second half of the 19th century to the first quarter of the 20th century. However, the collection also includes sought-after creations from the 17th and 18th centuries. These toys provide a glimpse into the evolution of toy manufacturing and children's play over the centuries.

The Museo della Bambola e del Giocattolo (Museum of Dolls and Toys) in Angera, Italy, offers visitors a nostalgic journey through the history of toys and dolls. Located in the picturesque setting of Rocca Borromeo, this museum houses an extensive collection that spans several centuries.

Visitors often appreciate the diverse range of exhibits, from antique dolls to vintage toys, which appeal to both children and adults. The museum's location within the medieval castle adds to its charm, providing a unique backdrop for the collection.

However, some reviewers note that the museum's layout can be confusing, and information provided about the exhibits is sometimes limited, especially for non-Italian speakers. The lighting in certain areas has been mentioned as inadequate, making it difficult to fully appreciate some of the smaller details of the exhibits.

While many find the collection impressive, a few visitors have commented that the museum could benefit from more interactive elements to engage younger audiences. The admission price is generally considered reasonable, but some feel it's slightly high considering the size of the museum.

Overall, the Museo della Bambola e del Giocattolo offers an interesting look into the world of toys and dolls, set in a beautiful historical location. It's particularly appealing to those with an interest in antique toys or nostalgia for childhood playthings, but may not hold the attention of all visitors for an extended period.
