The Municipal Museum 'Hernán Osorio Herrera' of Caraz is a municipal museum situated in the district of Caraz, in the province of Huaylas, within the Áncash region of Peru. This location is a significant cultural hub, offering visitors a chance to delve into the rich history and heritage of the region.
One of the highlights of the museum is the exhibit known as Ichiknuna. This is an 18.5 cm long mummy that was discovered at the archaeological site of Rambrash. The term 'Ichiknuna' is derived from two words in Quechua Ancashina language: 'ichik' meaning small, and 'nuna' meaning person, thus translating to 'small person'. This exhibit provides a fascinating insight into the ancient cultures of the region.
In addition to the Ichiknuna exhibit, the museum also showcases two lithic pieces from the formative period and a 55.6 cm long chonta stool (Bactris gasipaes). These artifacts further enrich the museum's collection, providing a broader perspective of the region's historical timeline and cultural practices.
