The Museo Paleontológico de Villa de Leyva is a significant paleontological museum located in the municipality of Villa de Leyva, Colombia. It forms part of the National University of Colombia's museum collection and is affiliated with the Faculty of Sciences in Bogotá. The museum serves as an academic, educational, historical, and dissemination center, showcasing part of Colombia's past and present heritage, particularly from the Villa de Leyva region.
The Museo Paleontológico de Villa de Leyva is the first in Colombia to feature an interactive paleontological garden within its premises. This paleogarden showcases a total of 87 plant species, many of which are native and some endangered. Visitors can appreciate these species through augmented reality, providing a unique and immersive experience.
The museum boasts a collection of over 500 fossils, the majority of which were discovered in the municipality of Villa de Leyva. These fossils date back approximately 130 million years, corresponding to the Lower Cretaceous period. This provides visitors with a unique opportunity to explore the ancient history of the region.
