The Museu Arqueológico de Sambaqui de Joinville (MASJ) is a museum situated in the city of Joinville, in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. It is a significant cultural and historical site that offers visitors a unique insight into the region's past.
The original collection of the Museu Arqueológico de Sambaqui de Joinville was assembled by Guilherme Tiburtius. He conducted extensive archaeological research in the Joinville region, gathering over twelve thousand pieces, primarily from the sambaquis, or shell mounds, in the area.
Sambaquis, or shell mounds, are archaeological sites that are a key feature of the Museu Arqueológico de Sambaqui de Joinville. These mounds, some of which are over 30 meters high, contain a variety of objects including shells, human skeletons, lithic material, and animal bones. However, they are primarily composed of shells.
