The Museu Municipal de Estremoz Prof. Joaquim Vermelho is situated in a historic building in Largo Dom Dinis, in the city of Estremoz. This location is steeped in history, with the building itself having been constructed in the 13th or 14th century and having undergone extensive renovations in the 16th, 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. Over the years, the building has served various purposes, including as a charity hospice, a royal school, a primary school for boys, and an industrial and commercial school.
The museum was officially opened on May 2, 1880, and its collection has been expanded over the years with the acquisition of various items. These include about 70 dolls from the Industrial School in 1941, sacred art pieces, furniture, and faience from the antique dealer Chambel in the late 1960s, and the Estremoz clay figurine collection from Júlio Maria dos Reis Pereira in 1971. These acquisitions have greatly enriched the museum's initial collection, providing a diverse range of exhibits for visitors to enjoy.
