The IJzer Tower houses the Museum of War, Peace and Flemish Liberation and has 22 floors. Since early 2014, the museum has been completely redesigned to offer visitors even better, more interactive and experiential insights into the Great War, with an emphasis on the Belgian-German confrontation. The guiding principle is the slogan: 'What remains of life? What remains of the country?' As a visitor you take the elevator up and from the panorama room or from the roof terrace you have a unique view over the entire front region, 84 meters high above the 'Flemish Fields'.

Museum aan de IJzer (IJzertoren) has 1 rating.
The Museum aan de IJzer, also known as IJzertoren (Yser Tower), in Diksmuide, Belgium, offers a sobering look at the impact of war and the Flemish peace movement. Located in a 84-meter-tall tower, it provides visitors with a comprehensive overview of the consequences of war and the importance of peace.
The museum's exhibits are well-curated, presenting a chronological journey through World War I and its aftermath. Visitors appreciate the bilingual information (Dutch and English), making it accessible to a wider audience. The use of multimedia elements enhances the learning experience, though some may find certain areas text-heavy.
A highlight of the visit is the panoramic view from the top of the tower, offering a stunning 360-degree vista of the surrounding Flemish countryside. This vantage point helps visitors understand the strategic importance of the area during wartime.
The museum does an excellent job of balancing the horrors of war with messages of peace and reconciliation. It effectively illustrates the futility of conflict and the importance of striving for peaceful resolutions.
Some visitors note that the museum's focus on Flemish history and the peace movement may be more engaging for those with a specific interest in Belgian history. Others mention that the tower climb can be challenging for those with mobility issues, although an elevator is available for part of the ascent.
Overall, the Museum aan de IJzer provides a thought-provoking and educational experience. It successfully combines historical information with a powerful anti-war message, making it a worthwhile visit for those interested in World War I history and peace studies.
