The museum's collection was initially established by the anatomist Christian Heinrich Bünger. Over time, the collection has grown and now includes over 3000 exhibits. These exhibits span a period from 1650 to 1920, providing a comprehensive overview of medical history during this time.
The museum is divided into five thematically different rooms. These rooms include demonstrations of the technique of wet preparation over time, presentations of wax and plaster models of human organs, a "race skull collection" that aims to demonstrate phrenological differences between various ethnicities, a collection of animal and human skeletons, and an embryological department showcasing specimens of early childhood malformations.
One of the rooms in the museum is dedicated to the history of obstetrics. This room documents the development of obstetrical devices over time. It also houses the "Marburger Lenchen", a full-body specimen of a pregnant woman, which is a unique exhibit in the museum.
