The Alte Rathaus (Old Town Hall) in Pirmasens is a monument-protected late Baroque building located in the city center. It served as the town hall from 1771 to 1945. Today, it stands as one of the last remnants of the time when Pirmasens was the residence of Landgrave Ludwig IX of Hesse-Darmstadt.
The Alte Rathaus is conveniently located in the pedestrian zone of Pirmasens at Hauptstraße 26. It is situated on the west side of the lower castle square, which is bounded to the east by the castle stairs with their large fountain system. This central location makes it easily accessible for visitors.
Since its restoration in 1963, the Alte Rathaus has been used as a museum. The main focus of the museum is the presentation of local and city history. It offers visitors a unique opportunity to delve into the rich history of Pirmasens and the surrounding region.
