Museum Mayer van den Bergh has 3 ratings.
The Museum Mayer van den Bergh in Antwerp, Belgium, offers visitors a chance to explore an impressive collection of art and historical artifacts. The museum is housed in a beautiful 19th-century building, which adds to its charm and atmosphere.
The collection, amassed by Fritz Mayer van den Bergh, showcases a wide range of works from the 14th to 16th centuries. The museum is particularly known for its Flemish Primitives and Renaissance art. One of the highlights is Pieter Bruegel the Elder's famous painting "Dulle Griet" (Mad Meg), which alone makes the visit worthwhile for many art enthusiasts.
Visitors often praise the museum's intimate setting, which allows for a more personal and less overwhelming experience compared to larger institutions. The rooms are well-organized, and the artwork is displayed in a way that enhances appreciation of each piece.
On the downside, some visitors have noted that the museum can feel a bit dark in certain areas, which can make it challenging to fully appreciate some of the artworks. Additionally, the information provided about the exhibits is sometimes considered limited, and not all pieces have descriptions in multiple languages.
The museum's size is relatively small, which means it can be explored thoroughly in about 1-2 hours. While this is perfect for those who prefer a concise art experience, others might find it lacking in comparison to more extensive museums.
Despite these minor drawbacks, the Museum Mayer van den Bergh is generally well-regarded for its high-quality collection, the opportunity to see important works like "Dulle Griet," and its contribution to understanding Flemish art history. It offers a focused and enriching experience for those interested in medieval and Renaissance art.
At the museum, they refused to accept my blue badge and access card, which clearly displayed my name and photo, for the discount. When I inquired why, the attendant said, "You don't look disabled enough." I was taken aback and asked for clarification, to which she replied that I needed to be using a mobility aid rather than standing independently. It was deeply upsetting to hear this, as it seems that being deaf, autistic, living with complex personality disorders, and battling multiple forms of cancer does not, in their view, qualify as a disability.
