Museum of Decorative Arts and its collection

Museum of Decorative Arts
Source

The Museum of Decorative Arts is housed in the historic Palacio Taranco, located in the Ciudad Vieja neighborhood of Montevideo, Uruguay. This building, which has been the museum's home since 1972, is a significant part of the city's history and offers a unique setting for the museum's collection.

Origins of the Palacio Taranco

The Palacio Taranco was commissioned in 1907 by the Taranco brothers, Félix, José, and Hermenegildo Ortiz de Taranco. The building's design and construction were overseen by French architects Charles Louis Girault and Jules León Chifflot, adding a touch of European elegance to the city of Montevideo.

Establishment of the Museum

In 1943, the state purchased the building along with its furniture. The family donated the art works with the express purpose of establishing the Museum of Decorative Arts. This generous donation allowed for the creation of a museum that showcases a wide range of decorative arts in a setting that is itself a work of art.
