The National Gallery of Art (NGA) is a prominent art museum in Washington, D.C. It is composed of two buildings, the East Building and the West Building. Both of these structures are situated on the National Mall, a significant location in the city. These two buildings are interconnected by an underground tunnel, providing easy access between the two.
The West Building of the National Gallery of Art is home to an extensive collection of paintings and sculptures. These works are by major European artists from the Middle Ages to the late 19th century, as well as American artists from the 18th century to the early 20th century. Notable pieces in the collection include works by Jan van Eyck, Raphael, Titian, Vermeer, Rembrandt, Monet, and Van Gogh. The museum also houses the only widely recognized painting by Leonardo da Vinci on the American continent, the portrait of Ginevra Benci.
The East Building of the National Gallery of Art, which opened in 1978, is dedicated to modern and contemporary art. The collection includes works by renowned artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Max Beckmann, Barnett Newman, and Alexander Calder. In addition to the art exhibits, the East Building also houses the museum's main office.
