The Neues Museum Weimar, which was known as the Thuringian State Museum from 1919 to 1946 and as the Neues Museum Weimar from 1999 to 2020, is a museum located in Weimar that is dedicated to contemporary art. It was the first museum of its kind in the region of the former GDR. The museum building was constructed as the Großherzogliches Museum (Grand Ducal Museum) between 1864 and 1869 by the Prague architect Josef Zítek.
The permanent exhibition Van de Velde, Nietzsche and modernism around 1900, which opened its doors in April 2019, presents the early modern arts from the Weimar School of Painting to Henry Van de Velde. This exhibition is a key feature of the museum and offers visitors a comprehensive look at the early modern arts.
Since 2019, the Neues Museum Weimar has been part of the 'Weimarer Moderne' quarters. This integration into a larger cultural and historical context provides visitors with a broader understanding of the museum's place within the city's cultural landscape.

The Neues Museum in Weimar, Germany, offers visitors an engaging experience focused on modern art and design. Located in the cultural heart of Weimar, this museum showcases a diverse collection of contemporary works, including paintings, sculptures, and multimedia installations. Many visitors appreciate the museum's well-curated exhibitions, which often feature both established and emerging artists. The building itself, with its modern architecture, adds to the overall experience.
Positive aspects frequently mentioned by visitors include the museum's manageable size, which allows for a thorough exploration without being overwhelming. The staff is generally described as helpful and knowledgeable. Some exhibitions have been particularly praised for their thought-provoking content and innovative presentations.
However, some visitors have noted that the museum's focus on contemporary art may not appeal to everyone, especially those preferring more traditional or classical art forms. Occasionally, there have been comments about the need for more detailed information about some artworks in English. A few visitors have also mentioned that the museum could benefit from expanded facilities, such as a larger café or more seating areas for reflection.
Despite these minor criticisms, the Neues Museum is generally well-regarded for its contribution to Weimar's cultural landscape. It provides a good contrast to the city's more historical attractions and offers a window into contemporary German and international art scenes.
