The New Iceland Heritage Museum, situated in Gimli, Manitoba, is a unique institution dedicated to the preservation of the history and artifacts of the Icelandic population that migrated to the Interlake Region of Manitoba. This area, known as New Iceland, was home to a large Icelandic community and the museum provides a comprehensive insight into their lives, culture, and history.
New Iceland, the area from Boundary Creek near Winnipeg Beach, Manitoba to Hecla Island, 36 miles along Lake Winnipeg's west shore, was run as an Icelandic colony from 1875 to 1881. This historical period is well-documented in the museum, providing visitors with a detailed understanding of the Icelandic settlers' life and challenges during this time.
