Nishiyama Zoo, situated in Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture, Japan, is a small municipal zoo that offers free admission to all visitors. Despite its size, the zoo is a popular destination due to its diverse range of animals and its location on a scenic low hill within Nishiyama Park.

Red Pandas at Nishiyama Zoo

Nishiyama Zoo is renowned for its red pandas, the official animal of Sabae City. The zoo is home to one of the largest groups of red pandas in Japan, with 11 individuals as of 2018. These pandas are descendants of a pair donated by the Beijing Zoo in 1984, and the youngest pandas now belong to the seventh generation.
