The Oderbruchzoo is a small zoo located in Altreetz, in the Märkisch-Oderland district of Brandenburg. It gained national attention in 1997 when it was threatened by the Oder flood. Despite the threat, the zoo was not flooded thanks to the efforts of the Bundeswehr, the fire brigade, the Technical Relief Agency, and other helpers. This event led to increased media attention and subsequent donations of money, goods, and animals to the zoo.
The Oderbruchzoo houses a variety of animals, focusing on native domestic and farm animals such as rabbits, goats, sheep, donkeys, and ponies. However, the zoo also houses some exotic animals like camels, llamas, and a grey parrot. The zoo's focus on native species is due to the climatic conditions in the Oderbruch and the supply possibilities of a small zoo with a limited budget.
One of the unique features of the Oderbruchzoo is its connection to a village for the disabled. This facility allows visitor groups, both with and without disabilities, to spend a few days in close contact with the animals. This often results in a high therapeutic benefit for people with disabilities. The village was modernized and expanded during the winter break of 2007/2008 with the help of EU funding.
