Okehampton Castle and its collection

Okehampton Castle
Source

The remains of the largest castle in Devon, in a picturesque setting on a wooded spur above the rushing River Okement. Begun soon after the Norman Conquest as a motte and bailey castle with a stone keep, it was converted into a sumptuous residence in the 14th century by Hugh Courtenay, Earl of Devon, much of whose work survives. After the last Courtenay owner fell foul of Henry VIII in 1538, it declined into an allegedly haunted ruin. Riverside picnic area and woodland walks nearby.

Okehampton Castle, located in Okehampton, England, offers visitors a glimpse into medieval history. The ruins of this Norman motte and bailey castle, dating back to the 11th century, are set in a picturesque landscape overlooking Dartmoor. The site provides informative displays and audio guides that help visitors understand the castle's history and architecture.

Visitors appreciate the well-preserved remains, particularly the impressive keep and the great hall. The castle grounds are well-maintained, offering pleasant walks with scenic views. Many find the site peaceful and atmospheric, making it an enjoyable spot for history enthusiasts and families alike.

However, some visitors note that the climb to the castle can be steep and may be challenging for those with mobility issues. Additionally, while the audio guide is informative, some feel that more interactive exhibits or guided tours could enhance the experience.

The castle's location on the edge of Dartmoor National Park is a plus, allowing visitors to combine their trip with exploration of the surrounding natural beauty. However, some visitors mention that the opening hours can be limited, especially during off-peak seasons, so it's advisable to check in advance.

Overall, Okehampton Castle provides an interesting insight into medieval English history, set in beautiful surroundings. While it may not have extensive facilities, it offers a authentic and educational experience for those interested in historical sites.
