The Osthofentor is a significant historical structure in the Hanseatic city of Soest. It was newly erected between 1523 and 1526, serving as a city gate on the Hellweg. This green sandstone building is the last remaining of the original eight main and two secondary gates of the Soest city fortification.
The Osthofentor has a dark history as well. In 1534, it was the site of execution for eight Anabaptists, who were likely missionaries of the Münster Anabaptist Kingdom. This event is a significant part of the city's history and adds to the historical depth of the Osthofentor.
From 1978 to 1982, a museum dedicated to the city and military history was established in the Osthofentor. It houses a collection of 25,000 medieval crossbow bolts, which is a unique attraction for history enthusiasts. This collection is the old defense treasure of the city of Soest, which was housed in the tower of St. Patrokli until the beginning of the 19th century.
