The Paper Museum of Pescia, known as Museo della Carta di Pescia in Italian, is a unique institution in Tuscany. It is dedicated to documenting, preserving, and transmitting the art of handmade paper. This makes it a special destination for those interested in the history and craft of papermaking.
The museum's collection is extensive, housing approximately 7,000 pieces. These include filigree paper forms, watermark waxes, punches, metallic cloths, and stamps. Additionally, the museum holds 600 linear meters of documents related to the ancient Magnani paper mills of Pescia. These documents form the Magnani Historical Archive, providing a rich resource for understanding the history of papermaking in the region.
The Paper Museum of Pescia is housed in the 18th-century paper mill Le Carte. This historic building was acquired in 2003 by the Paper Museum Association of Pescia Onlus. Constructed in 1712 and expanded in 1725, the mill continued to produce refined handmade paper until 1992. This gives visitors a chance to explore a site that was actively involved in the craft of papermaking for centuries.
