The Pará State Museum, also known as the Historical Museum of the State of Pará (MHEP), is a government-run institution established in 1981. It is situated in the Lauro Sodré Palace in the Old City district of Belém, in the state of Pará. The museum is known for its diverse exhibitions of contemporary artists.
The Pará State Museum is housed in a stunning example of Antoio Landi's architecture. The building was originally constructed to serve as the headquarters of the then captaincy of Grão-Pará, during a time when the capital of the province of Brazil was being transferred from Salvador to Rio de Janeiro.
The Pará State Museum comprises galleries, a workshop, an archive, an auditorium, a library, and various thematic rooms. These include the Pompeian, empire renaissance, art nouveau, and neoclassical rooms, all influenced by 19th-century revivalism. The museum also houses a vast collection of furniture, paintings, and decorative arts from the 19th and 20th centuries.
