Pitmedden Garden and its collection

Pitmedden Garden
Source

The heart of the property is the formal walled garden originally laid out in 1675 by Sir Alexander Seton. In the 1950s, the Trust set about re-creating the gardens following designs dating from the 17th century. Today, Pitmedden features over 5 miles of box hedging arranged in intricate patterns to form six parterres. These parterres are filled with some 40,000 plants bursting with colour in the summer months.

Pitmedden Garden, located in Pitmedden, Scotland, is a well-maintained historical garden that offers visitors a glimpse into formal 17th-century horticulture. The garden's main attraction is its meticulously designed parterres, featuring over 5 miles of box hedging arranged in intricate geometric patterns. These are filled with colorful flowers that change with the seasons, providing a visually striking experience.

Visitors often appreciate the garden's peaceful atmosphere and the opportunity to stroll through its well-kept grounds. The orchard, which grows many heritage apple varieties, is another highlight, especially during the fruit-bearing season. The on-site Museum of Farming Life adds an educational element, offering insights into the agricultural history of the region.

While many find the gardens beautiful and relaxing, some visitors note that the experience can be weather-dependent, as is common with outdoor attractions in Scotland. On rainy days, the enjoyment of the gardens may be limited. Additionally, some visitors mention that while the gardens are impressive, they may not occupy a full day's visit for those expecting a larger attraction.

The staff are generally described as friendly and knowledgeable, enhancing the visit with their insights into the garden's history and maintenance. The tearoom receives mixed reviews, with some praising the quality of refreshments while others find it a bit pricey.

Overall, Pitmedden Garden is a well-regarded attraction for those interested in historical gardens, horticulture, or seeking a peaceful outdoor experience in Aberdeenshire. It's particularly enjoyable for garden enthusiasts and those who appreciate meticulous landscape design.
