Projeto TAMAR is a Brazilian initiative that focuses on the preservation of endangered sea turtle species. The project was born out of a need to protect these creatures from extinction along the Brazilian coast. It has since evolved to include the protection of sharks and other marine life. The project's name, TAMAR, is a contraction of the Portuguese term for sea turtle, 'tartaruga marinha'.
Founded in 1980, Projeto TAMAR is funded by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICM-Bio), which is linked to the federal government, Petrobras, and by tourists who visit its facilities and purchase the project's t-shirts. The project's funding sources highlight the importance of visitor contributions to the continuation of its conservation efforts.
There are currently 22 Projeto TAMAR bases located along the entire coast of Brazil. Of these, 18 operate throughout the year, while the remaining 4 are operational during the turtle nesting period. This widespread presence along the coast allows for effective protection of the sea turtles and their habitats.
